Environment agency
It is Environmenta Agency's job to work out which places are at risk from flooding.They produce flood maps which show areas at risk.They also use automatic sensors and rainfall radar to monitor rainfall and the water level in many main rivers 24 hours a day.

Local authorities
They buit and maintain flood and tidal defences on other rivers and streams.Develope and implement major incident plans.And also support police in arranging evacuation and providing rest centres and emergenvy accommodation.

Preparing for the future

Every year the Environment Agency spends about £150million improving existing flood defences,and creating about 200 new defence schemes.

For the hard engineering,they prepared dams,embankments flood walls and flood sortage reservoirs to deal with excess water.Also, channelising the river staighten and deeping it,so that the water moves quickly.
For soft engineering,create washland or wetlands,the areas that provid space for floodwater.Afforestation,replanting trees in the catchment area.Prepare a good warning system so that residents can be evacuated or pet prepare for the flood efficiently.
